Accomplishments
2010 ACHIEVEMENTS
  • Provided books, bags, shoes, and uniform materials to 850 needy Sinhalese and Tamil students, mostly in the Kalutara district. These supplies enable them to attend the "free" public schools
  • Provided after-school English and Computer education to over 110 needy students. These skills enable them to compete with the more affluent students who attend private schools
  • Conducted Adult Spoken English course for 40 village women
  • Provided tutoring to 80 promising students to help them prepare for the public examinations that determine whether they can continue their education
  • Awarded certificates to 90 students who completed our Computer Course. They earned the following grades: 20 A's, 30 B's, 40 C's
  • Received fifteen Zonta scholarships awarded to our students based on their achievements in the Ordinary Level Examination. Zonta International is global organization of executives and professionals working together to advance the status of women worldwide
  • Helped 58 students prepare for the 5th Grade Scholarship Examination conducted by the Sri Lankan government. Twenty-one students were successful
  • Helped 72 students prepare for the O/Ls examinations. Sixty-eight were successful
  • Helped 38 students prepare for the A/L (entry level to University) exam. Thirty-two were successful, and six entered university
  • Improved English test scores of our students. In 2008 they obtained test scores of 20-25. In 2010 over 80% of our students earned scores of 80-95
  • Provided free mid-day meals to students who attend after-school classes during the week. Fifteen village women have the opportunity to prepare the meals and are paid accordingly
  • Held a Sinhalese and Tamil New Year sports festival attended by over 350 children and parents
  • Built an extension to the Community Center to house sewing machines where villagers can earn income from the local garment industry
  • Provided coir-making machines that enable villagers to be self-employed
  • Acquired land that will house a new playground and expanded medical clinic
  • Conducted the Arthachariya Program to help residents maintain home gardens that supply vegetables and fruits. Arthachariya Foundation is a national NGO that builds on environmental conservation as an entry point for poverty reduction
  • Provided opportunities for creative students to display their talents by joining the Muthuhara Children's Society of the Rupavahini Corporation. Our Teledrama won 1st Place in the All Island Competition. One of our students placed 2nd in the Art Competition
  • Conducted several English-only programs for the children, including one for stage performances and another for buying and selling market wares
